5 Ways to *Energetically* Cleanse Your Space

Greetings tribe!

In the spirit of the recent New Moon in Cancer (which had me in my feelings LAWD...anyone else??), I felt called to write this post for those who like me, have been feeling energetically…funky. Perhaps you’ve been feeling more emotional than usual these past few days, your anxiety has been higher than usual, you’ve perhaps been feeling unmotivated, lethargic, etc. Let me first affirm that those feelings are perfectly normal right before or even a few days after a New Moon and this particular one was very strong. There’s typically a conjuring up of a lot of “heavy” emotions right before a New Moon because this point in the Lunar Calendar offers an opportunity to purge ourselves and our respective spaces of energy that is old, dark, negative and/or just…unwanted, offering opportunities to set new intentions from a clean/clear place. Thank you, Moon!

So in the spirit of the New Moon and all that funky energy that may be lingering around in our physical and spiritual environments, I’m providing my virtual family with some helpful tips to maintain/establish a sense of calm in a space you’re likely spending more time in due to these unprecedented times with COVID-19.

Let’s get into it…

1. Sage & Palo Santo

Saging or “smudging” your space is critical to dispelling negative energy and establishing an energetically neutral environment. Typically purchased in a wrapped bundle of dried sage leaves, this plant has been used for centuries, largely by Native Americans and ancient civilizations to dispel ALL unwanted energies. It’s important to note that sage rids your space of ALL energy, good or bad to give you a completely clean slate on which you can set new intentions, meditate or sleep. Sage is best used when you move into a new space, right before meditation, after an argument or emotional event or even before you go to bed.

The sweet, woody aroma of Palo Santo, native to Mexico but to known to Peruvians as holy wood, translates directly to “holy tree”. Used most commonly by ancient and modern civilizations for its cleansing and grounding purposes, it differs slightly from Sage as it is a grounding and purifying tool that dispels all negative energy, leaving you with an energetically-cleansed & positively-charged space.

2. Burn Incense

I first fell in love with incense years ago for its rich and earthy aromas but over time as my spiritual journey deepened, I came to learn that incense does in fact have power in cleansing a space. In fact, when I was contracted to work with the Cambodian Ambassador to the US and his wife, in front of alters they had in their residence dedicated to their ancestors, they would always light incense which was believed to streamline the connection between the spiritual world and this realm.

You want to be sure to burn incense based on the intentions you’re establishing as incense scents range from energizing to relaxing, so you may need to experiment with a few before you settle on the ones you like the most. I’ve linked my absolute faves below!

3. Set intentions for your space

Whether you opt for a completely cleansed space (sage) or one left with positive energy and vibrations (palo santo), you want to be sure that as you’re wafting the rich aromas of either in your space, that you’re communicating with your Higher Power about the intentions you seek to manifest. For example, as I’m purifying my home, I open ALL windows and I pay particular attention to entrances of doorways to ensure that all negative energies are encouraged to leave my space. In the kitchen for example, I set intentions for healthy eating, a healthy lifestyle and nourishment for the mind, body and spirit. In the office, I set intentions for financial freedom and abundance, focused productivity, etc. You can set any intention for each specific room in your home. If you live in a studio, set multiple intentions for the whole space, specifically if it’s multifunctional (bedroom/office/etc.)

4. Create a space for crystals

Y’all already know I wasn’t going to end this post without mentioning crystals. I. LOVE. THEM.

So I already have a long post about the 5 MUST-HAVE CRYSTALS to start any/all crystal collections but in your freshly-cleansed space, you definitely want to make sure to include any of the following stones:

  • Clear Quartz

  • Rose Quartz

  • Tiger Eye

  • Black Tourmaline

  • Amethyst

  • Labradorite

  • Malachite

  • Aventurine

  • Turquoise

  • Red Jasper

5. Cosmic Scents

Shameless plug, but truly from a genuine and authentic place, I have to also recommend getting a room spray that cleanses energy, purifies the air and establishes a sense of peace and calm and many of my crystal-infused essential oil blends do just that. Lunar Eclipse, a fan favorite, is a blend of Lavender & Sweet Orange essential oils + Amethyst & Clear Quartz crystal infusions, was created specifically to dispel negative energy and to invoke deep sleep. I strongly recommend trying this out during your next cleansing ritual.

So in a nutshell, a cleansing ritual may look like this:

  • Light an incense or two (depending on how big your space is) with any of the aforementioned crystals surrounding the incense. Remember to choose the stick(s) based on the intention you're setting.

  • Sage your entire space with windows and doors open (if possible).

  • Spray “Lunar Eclipse” or "Ohm" Cosmic Scents around your space and body.

  • Go back around your space setting positive and clear intentions using Palo Santo.

  • Shower, drink water and GET REST.
